Urban Hope's Holy Week

This year Urban Hope Church in Coventry celebrated Holy Week a bit differently. The Revd Greg Bartlem writes about what happened.

From Maundy Thursday through till Easter Monday, Urban Hope Church (which was born out of the Bardsley Youth Project) and Coffee Tots (cafe / parenting project) took 55 people away to Criccieth in North Wales. For many attending, this was a transformative time, for some it meant seeing the sea for the first time whilst for others it meant welcome relief from quite challenging issues back in Coventry.

We used our time together to journey through the Holy Week story with Good Friday spent gathering around a cross on a beach, as we re-enacted the passion story. Easter Sunday was our 6th birthday as a church, which of course provided us with an additional reason to celebrate the resurrection.

Here are some comments from people attending:

  • "Awesome place, awesome time, awesome people. Couldn't be more happy and content if I tried and it's thanks to each and every one of you amazing people in this big community/family that I feel this way. What was said today made a lot of sense. Hate is taught, but love is natural. The capacity to love is within us all from the beginning and this community couldn't be a better example of that. For the first time in a while I feel like whoever's upstairs is listening."
  • "Life is awesome. I love you all and want to thank friends who have put up with me over the last few months. I know I haven't been easy to live with because I only saw the negative in everything. Since being to Wales I feel like myself and I am happy with myself and my life."
  • "Just wanted to let you know that what happened in Wales and the Bible verses I read I feel were God's way of preparing me for what was going to happen when I got back from Wales. I feel like he was preparing me for it and giving me advice through the verses of what I need to do know. I feel calmer now and can deal with the situation and stress and just know that God's with me."

Please continue to pray for Urban Hope and the work they are doing.
