'Arctic' Palm Sunday in Kenilworth
Bishop John and Jack the donkey

St Nicholas Church Kenilworth maintained a centuries old tradition in Abbey Fields on Palm Sunday, despite the freezing weather and Arctic conditions. A short open air service was led by Bishop John (Bishop of Warwick) followed by a procession to church with Jack the donkey.

Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphant entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem riding on a donkey, just one short week before the crowd turned against him and crucified him on Good Friday.

The snow-capped scenery of the beautiful park and symbolic pageantry were matched by the enthusiasm of Bishop John and his congregation for this occasion.  It was followed by a longer service in the warmth of the church!

Speaking after the service, Bishop John said:

"It was a joy to process on Palm Sunday in Kenilworth with Jack the donkey leading us.  In freezing weather, the intrepid few who joined the procession entered St Nicholas Church to join a large crowd of worshippers to begin the journey of Holy Week together."
