Bishop Christopher's Easter Message 2018

An Easter message to the people of Coventry and Warwickshire has been sent from the Bishop of Coventry (the Rt Revd Dr Christopher Cocksworth).

Can you believe it? This year Easter Sunday is on April Fools’ Day!

That’ll cause a laugh for some. A Festival for Fools! Easter’s meant to be in the spring but it’s felt like winter. Easter is all about new life and hope but it’s difficult for things to grow when the ground is cold. And it’s hard to have hope when your heart is hurting. Easter tells the story of a person raised from the dead. A foolish tale if ever you’ve heard one! Death is death, surely?

But what if it’s true? What if spring really has come, with the snow giving way to the sun and the frost fading as surely as the days are getting lighter? What if seeds hidden in the ground really are growing to life, to feed us with their fruit and make us smile with their beauty? What if a man, judged unfairly, tortured cruelly, executed ruthlessly, actually defeated death by a greater power?

What if God said to hurt and hatred, violence and conflict, death and destruction – April Fools! You thought you were strong but you’re weak. You thought you had won but you’ve lost. My love, my peace, my life will triumph. Jesus is alive! Death is defeated. Hope has come. Can you believe it?

The Bishop of Coventry, the Rt Revd Dr Christopher (Bishop Christopher)
