Name – Matt Jermyn

Job Title – Learning Mentor: Effective Structures

What did you do before you became a Learning Mentor?  I’ve worked in the Diocesan Office for quite a while as the Committee Support Officer.

What does your role involve? Effective structures means organising a church, its meetings, teams, etc., in a way which serves the church’s life and growth.  My role is to work with anyone who wants to improve in this area, whether that’s looking at how PCCs work together, how teams are organised in a church, supporting a new churchwarden or PCC secretary, or anything else!

What is your favourite Bible passage? Psalm 27 always really encourages me: “The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?... One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.”

Job Title – Learning Mentor: Inspiring Worship and Passionate Spirituality

What did you do before you became a Learning Mentor? I spent 7 years as a Youth and Schools Worker (2 years in Lancashire and then 5 in Northumberland) before then retraining as an RE and Philosophy Teacher and spending 8 years teaching in Warwickshire.

What does your role involve?  Supporting everyday Christians and wider church groups who want to develop a deeper experience of God’s presence and what He is doing in and through their lives. As a Diocese, we are looking to turn up the spiritual temperature and get people passionate about prayer, reading The Word, worshiping God, sharing their stories and encountering Him in their own personal ways. The vision is to support them to be wholehearted Sunday - Saturday Christians who are having real and transformative encounters with God throughout daily life.

What is your favourite Bible passage? John 10:10 – “I come that they might have life and have it in abundance”.  This was the verse being preached on the night I realised I had made a personal commitment to God, and it always makes me feel inspired…  “Life in abundance” suggests fullness, passion and not missing out on anything God has for us.  Who wouldn’t want some of that?!

Job Title - Learning Mentor: Empowering Leadership & Gift-based Ministry

What does your role involve? Helping people discover their Spiritual Gifts and explore how God is calling them to use them to bring Him glory. Supporting and investing in leaders, enabling them to grow in their own roles and to empower and mentor others around them. Some of this will be done through training courses, some through chatting over a slice of cake!

What did you do before you became a Learning Mentor? Most recently I managed the Oxfam Bookshop in Leamington Spa, where I was privileged to work with a fantastic team of around 50 volunteers, recruiting, training and empowering them to run the shop.

What is your favourite Bible Passage? This is a tough question! Currently I keep coming back to John 15 and Jesus’ words: “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me … This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples”.

I am also supporting churches to impact personal and spiritual change within us through deep, loving and accountable relationships in holistic small groups, whether that is a Bible study group, PCC or task group.
