Bishop John's new book

One of the fruits of Bishop John’s sabbatical in 2017 was the writing of a book. The book, Turned by Divine Love, Starting again with God and with others, is to be published on 22nd March by the Bible Reading Fellowship.

This book, the fruit of prayer, theological reflection and rich human experience, evokes fresh praying and thinking about all the key relationships in our lives, beginning with God. Drawing on the rich Christian traditions of both east and west, it speaks of theology and spirituality, to the head and the heart. It is a book of hope, encouraging us all to make a fresh start with God and, entering more fully into the relationship of love to which he invites us, to go out and to witness to this love. In this unique bringing together of the riches of the Christian east and west is the call to hear God’s gracious voice today.

The book includes, among others, illustrations of batiks done by Bishop John’s friend, Solomon Raj when he was in Birmingham in the ’80s.

The book will be launched in this diocese at Coventry Cathedral after the Chrism Eucharist (18th April) at which +John will be preaching.  Following the service, Bishop John will be interviewed about the book and there will be opportunity for questions. The book will be available for purchase from St Clare’s at the Cathedral. There will be an earlier launch in Oxfordshire, where the publishers are based, on Friday 29th March at St Mary’s Church, Bloxham at 7.30pm.

Extracts from several commendations that the book has received:

The Archbishop of Canterbury

'This wonderful little book weaves together depths from the Christian tradition, the experience of Bishop John and practical spirituality for readers: a perfect companion for meditation throughout the year, certain to inspire and challenge in equal measure.'

The Right Reverend Rachel Treweek, Bishop of Gloucester

'This beautifully written book is full of invitation to deeper discovery of who we are and who God is … This book will be a blessing to many.'

The Most Reverend Metropolitan Kallistos Ware of Diokleia

'This is a book full of wisdom.  There is unexpected wisdom in the rich selection of texts that Bishop John has included, from authors ancient and modern, eastern and western; but there is wisdom also in the perceptive comments of Bishop John himself … Many readers will certainly find, as I have done, that here is a book which evokes a ‘healing fountain’ in the depths of their heart.'

The Right Reverend Alison White, Bishop of Hull

'Sustaining, moving, challenging and refreshing, it draws us into the depth and beauty of faith. I hope many will, read, pray and live it.'

Br Laurence Freeman OSB

'In this book John Stroyan gives us something of immense beauty and energising hope drawn from the faith and spiritual vision of many centuries.'
