Retirement of Linda Wainscot Announced
04/11/19

Bishop Christopher has announced that Canon Linda Wainscot will be retiring as the Diocesan Director of Education (DDE) at the end of this academic year.

Linda will have overseen and served our 75 church schools and academies for nearly twenty years. These schools are currently educating 18,000 children and young people.

Linda says:

“The role of DDE continues to be a huge personal and professional privilege. When appointed at the end of 2000, I anticipated that I would probably be in post for five to ten years with the subsequent decade before retirement taking me into something new. However, it seems to me that, with such significant changes in the world of education, I have been doing ‘something new’ every year or so! I feel so fortunate to enjoy and feel grateful for every minute of the adventure.
There are too many highlights to reflect upon at this point, but one that exemplifies all that we are as ‘team Coventry’ is the cathedral service at the end of 2018 to celebrate the centenary of our Diocese. The cathedral full of smiling children and adults from every one of our diocesan schools, the colourful banners, the profoundly moving worship and the sense of family will stay with me for ever.”

Bishop Christopher said:

“Linda has been an exceptional DDE. In a time of momentous change in educational policy and practice, Linda has led the work of the Diocesan Board of Education (DBE), and all that flows from it and revolves around it, with extraordinary diligence.
Linda’s love for Christian and, in particular, Church of England, education; her love for children and young people is underpinned by her love for Jesus Christ and her desire that children, their schools and education should know Christ’s liberating love and learn to love him in response.
Linda has been an inspirational and self-giving leader who is leaving us with a remarkable legacy, and at the end of the academic year we’ll be sending her into a well-deserved retirement with Simon, her husband, with our love, our prayers and with our huge appreciation and gratitude.”

Linda will be retiring in August 2020. In the meantime, she will continue to do her best to lead the DBE in its desire to “empower others to be courageous, equipping them to deliver excellent Christian education so that all will flourish to achieve their full human potential”.
